A Bell Kalanchoe After Flowering: What Should You Remove?

  • by

When the last bell-shaped flowers fade, the plant often looks untidy before anything is actually wrong. Separate the old flower stalks from the healthy leafy stems before reaching for the scissors.

Follow a faded stalk back to its connection with the rest of the plant. Use clean tools and remove the spent flowering portion without cutting away healthy growth simply to make everything the same height.

Review the pot before watering more

A flowering plant may have been watered frequently while on display. Check how quickly its compost is drying now. Less growth or a cooler position can change that interval, even though the pot and plant are the same.

Empty a wet saucer or decorative cover and make sure the drainage holes are clear. Watering because the flowers have finished does not help the next display.

Keep the plant in suitable light and watch the new growth. If the stems are stretching, assess the position before adding feed. The next flowering period depends on the particular kalanchoe and its growing conditions; there is no useful promise that a haircut alone will produce another flush on a fixed date.
