A New Cactus Pot: Measure the Root Space, Not the Display

  • by

A much larger container can make a small cactus look established, but its unused compost may remain wet for longer than the plant's existing root ball. Choose the pot for the roots rather than for the size of the empty shelf.

Confirm the cactus identity and inspect its roots when repotting is genuinely needed. A decorative top dressing can hide how small the nursery root ball actually is.

Check the drainage before filling

Use a suitable growing medium and a container with an outlet. If a decorative cover has no outlet, keep the plant in a separate inner pot that can be removed for watering and inspection.

Do not place the cactus so deeply that healthy stem tissue is buried simply to make it stand straighter. Support a plant safely while you assess its potting position.

After repotting, follow guidance appropriate to that cactus and any root disturbance. Avoid a universal instruction to soak every succulent immediately. Label the pot with the repotting date and the plant's identity. Your later watering decisions should reflect the medium and the roots, not the size of the decorative container around them.
