Comparing Two Fertiliser Labels Without Chasing the Biggest Numbers

  • by

The three numbers on an NPK label describe nutrient proportions, not a simple score for how good the product is. A higher set of numbers does not automatically make a feed more suitable for your plant.

Compare the intended use, dilution and application instructions as well as the analysis. Two products with different concentrations may be used at different rates.

Start with the plant's situation

Is it actively growing? Has it recently been repotted into a medium that already contains fertiliser? Are light, watering and root conditions appropriate? Those questions come before choosing a nutrient ratio.

Do not diagnose a shortage solely from a slogan such as 'for greener leaves' or 'for more flowers'. Symptoms can have several causes, and nutrients work within the plant's overall growing conditions.

Write down the feed and dilution you choose. If growth changes, you will have a record rather than a shelf of half-used bottles with no clear application history. Keep the comparison practical: a suitable product used correctly is easier to evaluate than repeated switches to whichever package displays the largest numbers.
