Dichondra Care: Spreading Leaves and Root Moisture

  • by

Dichondra needs growing conditions suited to its species and spreading habit. Check the label and companion plants before using it as a pot cover.

Choose the dichondra for the site

Dichondras are spreading plants, but green and silver-leaved selections do not behave identically. Keep the cultivar label before choosing shade, exposure or winter protection. Decide whether the plant will trail from a container or cover garden ground.

Let the stems spread

Give trailing stems a clean edge rather than trapping them beneath neighboring pots. In the ground, prepare the area so young plants are not immediately competing with established weeds. Avoid burying the crown under a thick mulch layer.

Check moisture where roots are growing

A hanging fringe can look dry while the center of the pot stays damp. Check the actual root zone, water evenly when needed and let excess drain. Small containers may need more frequent inspection in wind, without requiring a fixed daily watering rule.

Renew thin growth selectively

Remove dead sections and inspect the base if the center becomes sparse. Trim healthy trailing shoots when shaping is needed, retaining useful leaves. Adjust light and root conditions before assuming that extra fertilizer will restore a thinning mat.
