Allow room for a small plant to spread
Ji Xing Mei is a nursery name used for small-leaved stonecrop-type succulents. Keep the botanical label for hardiness and seasonal guidance. A compact purchased clump may develop trailing or spreading stems as it matures.
Check light at the growing tips
Firm new growth is more useful to assess than the old shape of the nursery pot. Increase exposure gradually if the plant was sheltered. Pale elongated shoots may need better light, while sudden scorch requires a different adjustment.
Inspect the mat at its base
A dense canopy can conceal a wet or dry root ball. Use draining succulent compost, water when required and let surplus escape. Do not assume that every fine stem needs a daily mist or that a drought-tolerant plant can be left dry indefinitely.
Refresh sparse growth carefully
Healthy stem pieces may root where the identified plant allows it. Establish them in appropriate conditions rather than burying rotten sections. Trim selectively and correct light or root problems that would otherwise make the renewed plant sparse again.
