Heather Types: Flowers, Habit and Soil Needs

  • by

Heathers include plants with different sizes and flowering seasons. Compare the species or cultivar label before choosing soil, planting space and winter care.

Heather includes more than one group

Heather is used for plants in groups including Erica and Calluna. Their size, season and soil requirements differ. A translated list of decorative names is less useful than a reliable species or cultivar label.

Compare the whole plant

Look at leaves, branching and individual flowers as well as the overall color. Some heathers stay compact, while tree heathers can become much larger shrubs. Check the expected mature size before planting beside a path or in a small pot.

Flowering seasons vary

A collection can include plants that flower at different times. Use local growing information for the named selection rather than assuming a winter-flowering description applies in every climate.

Check the soil requirement

Many heathers prefer acid conditions, but the group includes exceptions. Confirm the named plant before changing soil chemistry. This comparison concerns garden selection; appearance or a traditional use is not evidence that an unknown plant is suitable for tea or skin preparations.
