A Succulent Pot Is Dry on Top but Wet Below: What to Check

  • by

Inspect the depth where roots live

A dry surface is only one observation. In a deep pot, the lower mix can remain damp after the top changes color. Compare the pot's weight and check deeper moisture carefully without repeatedly stabbing established roots.

If the root zone is still wet, do not water just to match a calendar. Check drainage openings, the outer cover and whether the pot is oversized. Persistent wetness with soft stems warrants a root inspection.

FAQ

Should I replace the entire mix immediately?

Not automatically. First establish whether drainage, pot size or a hidden wet center explains the problem.
