An orchid needs care matched to its botanical identity. Keep the nursery label and check its growing medium before choosing light or watering advice.
Identify the orchid before setting its routine
Orchids occupy many habitats, so filtered light and an airy root zone are starting questions rather than a complete prescription. Keep the genus or species name and check whether it is terrestrial, epiphytic or grown in another specialist way.
Choose medium for the roots
Use a suitable orchid mix rather than automatically packing garden soil around every plant. Roots need both moisture and air in proportions appropriate to the orchid. Pot size, material and medium age all affect how long the center stays wet.
Read the plant and its seasonal growth
Check root firmness, new shoots and moisture before watering. Wrinkled leaves or pseudobulbs can follow dry conditions or roots that can no longer absorb water. Adding water without distinguishing the cause may make deterioration worse.
Repot and feed with purpose
Replace broken-down medium at a suitable stage and preserve healthy roots. Keep divisions large enough to establish. Apply appropriate nutrition during growth, avoiding the assumption that a plant without flowers simply needs stronger fertilizer.
