Carnation Care: Light, Drainage and Healthy Growth

  • by

Carnations need suitable light and drainage to grow well. Inspect the roots and foliage before responding to poor growth with extra watering or a stronger feed.

Give carnations light and open space

Carnations need a bright position and a root zone that does not remain stagnant. Allow air around stems and leaves, especially when several pots are displayed together. A crowded indoor corner is unlikely to produce sturdy flowering growth.

Water at the root zone

Wet the growing medium when needed and let surplus water escape. Avoid repeatedly soaking the crown. In a bed, water new plants through establishment; in a pot, check drying according to weather and root volume.

Support and remove flowers selectively

Tall flowering stems may need discreet support before they lean. Cut faded flowers back to a suitable healthy point if more growth is wanted, leaving sound leaves. Cutting flowers for a vase also removes resources and buds, so balance harvest with the size of the plant.

Know the type and season

Border carnations and florist-grown pot selections can differ in hardiness and flowering response. Use the cultivar's guidance for winter care. Strong fertilizer is not a cure for long, weak stems caused by poor light.
