Gardenia flowering time depends on the cultivar and climate. Clemson Extension describes a main display in May and June, with occasional flowers later in summer, for its South Carolina growing context. Those months should not be treated as a worldwide calendar.
Gardenia jasminoides has fragrant white flowers, with single and double forms among its cultivars. An individual flower fading is different from unopened buds repeatedly dropping, so identify which problem you are seeing before changing care.
When buds fall before opening
Check moisture, light and recent temperature conditions. Both excessive watering and a root ball allowed to become too dry can contribute to bud drop. Insufficient light and unsuitable temperatures also deserve attention.
Keep the root environment moist but well drained. For a container, check inside the pot cover for standing water rather than judging only the visible surface.
Before feeding or pruning
Gardenias prefer acidic soil. If leaves yellow or growth weakens, assess the growing medium and root conditions instead of assuming every plant needs extra iron or stronger fertiliser.
Prune after the main flowering period when shaping is necessary, following guidance for the cultivar and local season. Heavy cutting at the wrong time can remove potential flowering growth. A second feed cannot replace buds that have already been cut away.
