Lucky bamboo is Dracaena sanderiana, not a true bamboo or a plant that naturally requires a permanent vase. It can be grown in a suitable moist potting mix or maintained in water with appropriate care.
Choose bright, indirect light and avoid a position exposed to extreme heat or cold. A shaped stem or elaborate arrangement does not change the plant's need for suitable growing conditions.
Keep the water arrangement visible
Check that the roots remain covered, replace the water regularly and clean the container gently. NC State Extension recommends chlorine-free water; New York Botanical Garden also notes sensitivity to salts in the water.
Use a consistent routine for inspection rather than merely topping up an increasingly dirty vase. Handle the roots carefully and support the stems securely while cleaning.
Feed weakly and cautiously using appropriate guidance. More fertiliser can damage a plant, and water-grown displays should not receive the same dose as an actively growing plant in an ordinary potting mix by guesswork.
Yellow leaves and stems
Check water quality, light, feeding history and the condition of each stem. Several canes in a display are separate plants, so record whether one or all are deteriorating.
A softening or yellowing stem needs investigation; it is not proof that the vase needs another household additive. Keep photographs and a record of water changes. If the arrangement continues to decline, seek plant-specific advice instead of assuming a decorative water display can remain unchanged indefinitely.
