A collection of unlabelled tulip bulbs is difficult to organise when planting time returns. Keep the cultivar information with the bulbs from the moment they leave the pot or bed.
Record where each group grew and how it performed. A variety that disappointed in a shaded container may not have had the same conditions as one in an open bed. Do not turn one season's result into a judgement about every bulb of that name.
Store groups so you can inspect them
Use an arrangement that lets you check the bulbs and keeps their labels readable. Avoid sealing damp material into a container and forgetting it until autumn.
Inspect before storing and again before planting. Soft, damaged or visibly decaying bulbs should not simply be mixed back into a sound batch. If an entire group looks poor, review the lifting and storage conditions as well as its original growing site.
Keep a short inventory: cultivar, approximate quantity, storage location and any concerns. It saves the familiar autumn exercise of guessing which bag contains the tall red tulips and which one contains an unknown mixture.
