Snake Plant Leaves Leaning: Do Not Reach for a Bigger Pot Yet

  • by

A leaning snake plant may need support or a better-balanced container, but a larger mass of wet compost is not automatically the solution.

Check whether the entire plant is unstable, individual leaves are bending, or the base has softened. These are different situations and should not all be treated as a request for more root space.

Look at the base and the light

Inspect the compost and the leaf bases carefully. A persistently wet container needs a different response from a sound plant that has grown toward one side of a window.

If repotting is necessary, select a suitable container for the root system and the weight of the plant. A stable outer arrangement can help with balance without requiring a dramatically oversized growing pot.

Do not tie leaves tightly together to hide a worsening problem. Note which leaves are affected and whether new growth is upright. Where tissue is soft, damaged or continuing to collapse, investigate before watering or feeding again. The shape of the leaves is useful evidence; it should not be concealed before you have checked what is happening at their base.
