Why a Gift Tulip Pot Blooms Before the Garden Tulips

  • by

A flowering tulip bought for the house may have been prepared to bloom earlier than bulbs outside. Its timing is not a reliable forecast for every tulip in your garden.

Check the label for the cultivar and any information about forcing. The plant's production history, the conditions it experienced and its present position all belong in the explanation.

Do not compare dates without context

A warm room and an outdoor bed are not equivalent growing spaces. Record where the gift pot is kept and when its flowers open. Note whether nearby garden bulbs are the same variety before treating their later display as a problem.

Keep the pot out of conditions that make its compost dry unnoticed, and follow its care instructions after the flowers finish. A decorative sleeve can hide both a dry root ball and trapped water beneath the pot.

If you want a display at a particular time next year, buy bulbs or prepared pots intended for that purpose and follow their specific instructions. Moving an ordinary planted pot into a warm room is not a dependable substitute for a planned forcing process.
