Why a Nursery Plug Can Dry Differently from the Surrounding Mix

  • by

Check the original root ball separately

A newly potted succulent may still have a dense nursery plug in its center. Water can move differently through that material and the looser mix around it. A damp outer ring does not prove the original roots are evenly supplied.

At the next justified root inspection, note both materials and their condition. Avoid tearing healthy roots apart merely to make the mix look uniform. After necessary repotting, adjust watering to the actual root zone rather than keeping the previous interval.

FAQ

Is more water always the answer?

No. The center may be wetter or drier than its surroundings; check before changing the routine.
